Lots of Banksia Pods! |
As we remember those who have so bravely served this country on Veterans Day, we want to express our sincere gratitude to the past and present soldiers and their families.
9/11/11 We have posted close to 300 red mallee caps, collibah, and several slabs from the last New South Wales Australian shipment recently. We will be adding more rounds and squares along with brown mallee caps. Once this shipment gets posted, I've got box elder, big leaf maple, and Oregon myrtle to cut and post. The Western Australia shipment is enroute. It's a big one - approximately 1000 pieces in all: about 400 burl caps, blocks, vase/platter blanks, grass tree roots, slabs, sheoak, and various hardwoods.
8/7/11 We've added some beautiful burl slabs on our Slabs and Table Tops page. Now our focus is to post the rest of the New South Wales Australian shipment that includes red mallee caps of all sizes, coolibah, bowl blanks, whole burls, a few whole logs, and some sculpture blanks. It will take some time to complete, but we'll post as we go. A Western Australia shipment will be enroute soon containing burl caps, blocks, boards, and blanks in a variety of species way too numerous to list.

How Burls are Sold, Measured, and Shipped
Sold: Burls are bought and sold by weight, so do not try and figure the board foot on a burl block. The weight is based on their original green weight with the bark still on. Burls are then waterblasted to remove bark. This can remove a significant amount of weight in itself. By the time the burls reach us, they may have lost 20% or more of their original harvest weight. This holds true with North American burls as well. Some burls, even within the same species have a thicker, more resinous bark, so that two specimens of the same harvest weight could differ markedly in weight after debarking. Burl shape also affects the bark to weight ratio. Some burls have more sapwood (which contains more moisture) on the edge and can lose more weight when drying. The original harvest weight of the burl is used throughout the sale process eliminating all these variables.
All burls should be considered green or partially air dried unless stated otherwise. Burls coming from Australia, as a requirement of our import permit, have been fumigated with methyl bromide. Most cut burl blocks are sealed with wax or anchor seal. It is the wholesaler's preference to seal or not to seal burl caps. Australian burl caps are typically not sealed whereas Tasmanian burls and blocks are.
Measurements:
We try and be as accurate as possible with measurements, they are only approximate. It is difficult to accurately measures a burl cap as they may vary greatly in thickness and in width.
Shipping: Orders received and paid for before 10:00 a.m. EST will generally ship that same day. Orders after that should go out the next business day. All shipments less than 150 pounds (single item or total box weight) will be shipped UPS ground. Boxes over 70 pounds or excess size accrue additional fees charged by UPS. Any shipment over 150 pounds has to be shipped via freight at cost. I will ship US Postal Service (USPS) Priority Mail or Overnight if requested by the customer at cost. Based on my experience, UPS ground is routinely cheaper than USPS and it can be tracked.
I am more than happy to ship foreign or APO/FPO orders. Generally these are shipped USPS because it is usually more economical. It is the
customers responsibility to make sure that there are no restrictions on the species they are wanting to import. It is also the customers responsibility to pay all duties and excess fees associated with a foreign shipment. I will provide all Latin names to the customer and will fill out the U.S. Customs declaration form.
We will make every effort to ship your order as expeditiously as possible and in a manner that minimizes damage.
